Build a Line Design Challenge Dilemma

Build a Line Badge

I was so honored that Brenda let me design this badge for the challenge. It’s being featured on blogs across the www as people are gearing up to participate.

I am contemplating taking part in the Build a Line Design Challenge in 2015. It’s a master class being taught by Brenda Sue Lansdowne of B’sue Boutiques. The objective of the class is to develop a prototype of a jewelry line.

As you may know, I’ve been struggling to define my style and develop a cohesive look to my jewelry designs. I have no idea how to start. So, in theory, this challenge seems like just the sort of boot camp my muse and I need to find our voice.

I say “in theory” because the first step of the challenge/class is to pitch an idea to Brenda. What’s holding me back is the requirement that components from B’sue Boutiques be visible and prominent parts of the designs. Continue reading

Jewelry Design Challenge: Whimsical

Bumpy "eye" bead charm braceletThe theme for this week’s Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design blog challenge was “whimsical.” If you’ve been following my blog you know I’ve found defining my jewelry style a challenge. I’ve been looking for the right descriptive terms to use so people can find my jewelry online.

I think of my jewelry as rustic. Organic. Southwestern. Vintage-inspired. Occasionally elegant. And there were always a handful of pieces I couldn’t find a label for. Turns out, they’re whimsical. Who knew? Continue reading

My First Blog Anniversary

Paisley Lizard anniversary logoToday is the anniversary of my first blog post. It’s almost hard to believe a whole year has come and gone. When I look at my blog archives, I am reminded of all the fun things I’ve done this year. I decided to celebrate this milestone by doing a sort of “my year in review” retrospective. Here we go, not necessarily in chronological order. Continue reading

Bead Hoarders Blog Hop

Bead Hoarders Blog HopIt’s reveal day for the 2nd annual Bead Hoarders Blog Hop! This is my first time participating, but I have been a bead hoarder for many years.

Our hostess for this hop is Lori Anderson. I met Lori, virtually, earlier this year when I took part in her Bead Soup Blog Party. That was my first blog hop, and my introduction to so many amazing jewelry and component designers.

The purpose of this hop is to use “beads you’ve been hoarding as too precious, or too pricey. or just too special to work with …” I have lots of those. Some I bought, some were given to me as gifts. All of them are my preciousContinue reading

Jewelry Design Challenge: Botanical

Leaf and berry earringsThe theme for this week’s Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design blog challenge was “botanical.” The members were asked to suggest and vote on ideas for the weekly themes this month and this was one I proposed.

Which made me feel like I really had to take my jewelry design to the next level. Which resulted in a complete creative block. I thought I couldn’t do anything remotely similar to the botanical-inspired jewelry designs I’ve done in the past. And there have been a lot.  Continue reading

Jewelry Design Challenge: Rustic

Rustic Fall Flowers NecklaceThe theme for this week’s Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design blog challenge is “rustic.” Finally, something I know.

Usually before starting my jewelry design for these weekly challenges I have to do some research into the theme. Rustic is something I think I know. It’s my jewelry design comfort zone. But just to be sure, I did a Google search.  Continue reading

We’re All Ears November Challenge

All Ears November buttonThe  inspiration for this month’s We’re All Ears challenge on the Earrings Everyday blog was a short animated film about a mystical creature and a young girl.  I’m no kind of film critic, so I can’t say why I was so enchanted by this short film. All I can say is, much like our hostess, I’d love to see this made into a full-length feature.

The story takes place in a forest, so there’s lots of nature images and colors by which to be inspired. And I do love earth tones for my jewelry. However, I was more inspired by the misty white-winged mystical creature that came to drink from the well where the little girl was filling a bucket.  Continue reading

Jewelry Design Challenge: Modern

metal flower chokerThis week’s challenge on the Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design blog was to design “modern” jewelry.  I had no idea what that style encompassed. As usual, I tried to look it up on the internet. (Does anyone visit the library for this sort of thing anymore?)

Modern art is defined as works produced during the 1860s to the 1970s and characterized as a movement away from traditional arts and more toward abstraction. That was easy. There’s even an entry on Wikipedia. Modern jewelry, on the other hand, has no Wikipedia entry and no definitive characteristics. Which happens to be frustratingly true of most jewelry styles.  Continue reading

Moving from Weebly to WordPress

House moversIf you’re considering moving your blog from Weebly to WordPress, and you’re not a code geek, I’m here to tell you it can be scary. But, just like any kind of move, having some hired-muscle can make all the difference.

I recently transitioned my blog and the rest of my website from a Weebly platform to WordPress. I did not do it on my own. I wisely sought help from a consultant. I’ll tell you more about that in a minute. But first, let me tell you why I moved. Continue reading
